CAN Warns Christians Against Religious Hostility Online

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), represented by chairman Joseph Hayab, issued a warning against religious hostility, particularly urging Christians, especially the youth and clergy, to exercise restraint in the face of increasing religious provocations on social media. In a statement released on Wednesday in Kaduna, Hayab cautioned against ongoing online debates that often misrepresent faith and contradict biblical teachings, risking deeper divisions among religious groups.

He referenced biblical passages, including Titus 3:9 and 2 Timothy 2:23, advising Christians not to respond to provocations or ridicule. Hayab stressed that God does not require human defense against verbal attacks, as such actions diminish the essence of the Christian faith.

He warned against engaging in unproductive arguments that could lead to strife and undermine the message of love and peace central to Christianity. The rise of social media has added a volatile dimension to religious discourse in Nigeria, with inflammatory posts and comments frequently sparking outrage and physical confrontations.
