Atiku Abubakar Proposes Fuel Subsidy to Cut Prices

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar's proposal to restore petrol subsidy could potentially lower fuel prices to between ₦400 and ₦500 per litre, as stated by Dino Melaye, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Melaye made this announcement during the Democracy Today programme on African Independent Television (AIT) on Monday.

He emphasized that the return of the subsidy is part of the ADC's strategy to enhance affordability for Nigerians, arguing that a reduction in petrol prices from ₦1,400 would positively impact the costs of goods and services. Atiku, the ADC presidential candidate for the 2027 election, had previously announced his campaign council, appointing Melaye to lead the contact and mobilization directorate.

In contrast, President Bola Tinubu dismissed Atiku's proposal, labeling it as indicative of a lack of understanding of governance and economic principles. Melaye also pointed out that the high cost of petrol is a significant contributor to the rising cost of living, affecting transportation and the movement of goods across the economy.
