Alli Campaign Blasts Makinde Over Failed N8.5bn Power Project

The Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation has condemned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for his administration's failure to ensure adequate electricity supply, attributing the continued reliance on fuel-powered generators for streetlights to his incompetence. Bisi Oladele, the Director of Media and Publicity for Alli’s Campaign Council, stated that Makinde's excuses are disingenuous and indicative of leadership failure.

Following the signing of the Electricity Act 2023 by President Bola Tinubu, states were empowered to manage their electricity needs. Despite this, the Makinde administration's 11-megawatt Independent Power Project (IPP), valued at N8.5 billion and awarded to Elektron Energy, failed to generate any electricity.

The project was terminated late last year, leaving Oyo State without value for the funds spent. In contrast, power projects in 16 other states have succeeded, generating significant electricity.

The campaign organization criticized Makinde for his ineffective governance while pursuing a presidential aspiration, noting that the diesel-powered streetlights are no longer operational.
