Okpekpe 10km Road Race Set for May 30, 2026

The 11th edition of the Okpekpe 10km Road Race, a premier gold label race in West Africa, is scheduled for May 30, 2026, in Okpekpe, Edo State. Technical Director Yusuf Alli announced that elite athletes will begin arriving on May 25, ahead of the race weekend.

He emphasized the importance of personnel working diligently to ensure a successful event. A total of 40 elite athletes have confirmed their participation, with over 50 expressing interest, reflecting a growing trend in road racing in Nigeria.

Dr. Sam Ogbondeminu, the medical director of the race and the first Nigerian doctor to become a World Athletics certified medical director, assured that all medical aspects will be managed effectively. Security measures will be significantly improved to ensure the safety of participants, with a focus on monitoring the race route.

The event aims to enhance Nigeria's long-distance running culture and create economic value through sports tourism.
