Nigeria's Tax System Reforms Under Dr. Zacch Adedeji

The Nigeria tax system is experiencing one of its most significant transformations in decades, led by Dr. Zacch Adedeji, the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS). The reform agenda aims to transition from a manual, fragmented, and compliance-heavy system to a digital, integrated, and data-driven framework.

The Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which commenced on January 1, 2026, establishes uniform procedures to facilitate tax compliance and optimize revenue. This Act is designed to standardize tax administration, defining the responsibilities of tax authorities and ensuring clearer procedures for taxpayers.

The reforms also focus on widening participation in the tax system, reducing leakages, and improving information-sharing. A significant aspect of the reform is the digitalization of tax administration, allowing taxpayers to manage their tax affairs through a self-service portal.
