Voting Begins in Zambia's Crucial General Elections

Voting commenced in Zambia's general elections at 6 am local time on the scheduled date, with polls closing at 6 pm. The Electoral Commission of Zambia anticipates results to be announced on Monday.

Voters are participating in the election of a president, members of parliament, and local government councillors. Hakainde Hichilema, the current president since 2021, is seeking re-election and faces a formidable challenge from over ten candidates, notably Brian Mundubile, a veteran parliamentarian making his first presidential bid, who leads an opposition alliance supported by former president Edgar Lungu's followers.

According to Zambian electoral laws, if no candidate secures more than 50 percent of the presidential vote, a run-off must occur within 37 days. Hichilema's campaign has focused on his economic achievements, particularly in debt restructuring following Zambia's 2020 sovereign default.

The election's outcome will determine if Hichilema consolidates his leadership or faces a run-off against a united opposition.
