Ebonyi State NGO Uncovers 10 New FGM Cases, Urges Intensified Awareness

In Ebonyi State, the Tomorrow Girl Initiative uncovered 10 new cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) in September 2025. The Executive Director, Lucy, revealed that the cases were identified in the Ndeguokpitumo community axis of Abakaliki.

Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, FGM prevalence remains high in rural areas, with some believing it prevents promiscuity. The Tomorrow Girl Initiative, in partnership with various organizations, has been working to eradicate FGM since 2020.

The group has seen increased acceptance and awareness, with a recent incident in Ohaukwu LGA where a woman publicly denounced FGM. Intensified sensitization campaigns in local dialects are needed to eradicate FGM in Ebonyi State entirely.
