Ten Lions Found Dead in Tanzania Due to Poisoning

On September 18, wildlife officials discovered ten dead lions in the Ndutu region of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania. Preliminary autopsy reports suggest the lions died from suspected chemical poisoning, potentially after consuming poisoned meat or drinking contaminated water.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for its dense population of big cats. The incident raises concerns about human-wildlife conflict, exacerbated by escalating land disputes since 2022, as the government seeks to relocate local populations to safeguard natural habitats.

Lions are classified as vulnerable by international conservation organizations due to habitat loss and diminishing prey. Similar issues have been reported in nearby Kenya, where at least 20 elephants have died from suspected pesticide exposure.
