Ogun State Arrests 108 for Indiscriminate Waste Disposal

On Wednesday, the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) arrested and prosecuted 108 residents in Abeokuta for indiscriminate waste disposal, a violation of the state's waste management law. The enforcement team apprehended offenders who dumped refuse in public places, including roadsides and gutters, contributing to environmental degradation.

Farook Akintund, the special adviser to the governor on waste management, expressed disappointment over the persistent habit of residents improperly disposing of waste despite government efforts to provide waste collection services at doorsteps. He emphasized the need for a cultural shift in waste disposal practices to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the state capital.

Akintund warned that indiscriminate dumping poses health risks, particularly during the rainy season, as it can lead to flooding and groundwater contamination. He affirmed that the state government, through OGWAMA, would continue to enforce the law to protect the environment and discourage unlawful practices.
