Ogun Residents Demand Action Against Refuse Dumping Crisis

In Ogun State, environmentalists and residents are urging for tougher measures to combat the growing issue of indiscriminate refuse dumping. Mr. Ola Oresanya, during a food and beverage exhibition in Abeokuta, highlighted the state's environmental challenges, noting that despite efforts by Governor Dapo Abiodun's administration, waste disposal remains a significant problem.

Reports indicate that indiscriminate dumping has become prevalent, particularly in areas like Kemta and Ibafo, where residents resort to burning waste due to the lack of proper waste collection services. Public health specialist Tonia Shodunk expressed concerns about the health risks associated with improper waste disposal, including the spread of communicable diseases such as cholera and dysentery.

The situation is exacerbated by the absence of adequate waste management infrastructure, leading to heaps of trash obstructing roads and gutters, which further deteriorates the environment and public health.
