128 Boxers Compete for 10 Slots in 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Nigeria Boxing Federation is conducting open trials in Surulere, Nigeria, where 128 boxers, including four diaspora athletes, are competing for 10 slots to represent Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The trials commenced with 101 men and 27 women participating, showcasing strong performances across various weight categories.

Preliminary bouts began on Tuesday, with quarter-finals held on Wednesday and semi-finals scheduled for Thursday, followed by medical tests and weigh-ins. The championship bout is set for March 6, running from 4 PM to 10 PM.

Vivian Azimen, the Secretary General of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, confirmed that the team size would expand due to the intervention of Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the National Sports Commission. The team will consist of five female and five male boxers.

Azimen expressed confidence in the selection process, emphasizing the importance of the trials in forming a competitive team. The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled for July 24 to August 1.
