128 Boxers Compete for 10 Spots in 2026 Commonwealth Trials

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) is conducting trials for 128 boxers, including four diaspora athletes, to secure 10 coveted spots on Nigeria's boxing team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. According to Vivian Azimen, the Secretary General of the NBF, the trials feature 101 men and 27 women, with the aim of selecting three women and seven men.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has promised that five female and five male boxers will represent Nigeria. The trials commenced on March 4, 2024, with preliminary bouts scheduled to continue into the night, leading to quarter-finals and semi-finals.

The final bouts will take place on March 6, 2024, from 4 PM to 10 PM. The competition spans ten weight categories for both men and women.

Nigeria's boxing pedigree was highlighted by the success of the 2022 Commonwealth Games team, which returned with four medals. The upcoming Commonwealth Games are scheduled for July 24 to August 1, 2026.
