14 Candidates Sign Peace Accord for Osun Election

On Thursday, all 14 governorship candidates participating in the August 15 gubernatorial election in Osun State signed a peace accord organized by the National Peace Committee (NPC). Prof.

Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urged all political parties, candidates, and supporters to adhere to the agreement, emphasizing the importance of non-violence and mutual respect. He called for candidates to promote the spirit of the accord among their supporters and to avoid violence and inflammatory rhetoric.

Governor Ademola Adeleke expressed that his administration has faced ongoing violence and intimidation, which he attributed to directives from Gboyega Oyetola. He stated that he nearly boycotted the peace meeting due to the situation but attended out of respect for peace leaders.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and Cardinal John Onaiyekan also spoke, urging political parties to maintain peace leading up to the election.
