Osun State Prepares for Election Amid Security Concerns

Osun State is conducting an election today with 15 political parties cleared to participate. The major candidates include incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently added Francis Ajala of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the ballot. Yemisi Adeagbo represents the African Democratic Party as the only female candidate.

The political atmosphere has been tense, with 73 election-related violent incidents resulting in 29 deaths, prompting the deployment of 25,310 security personnel, including 15,000 from the Nigeria Police Force and 10,210 from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. INEC has completed preparations for the election, indicating it is 90% ready, and has expressed concerns about vote buying.
