Ekunke Wins Inaugural FIDE World Amateur Chess Title

Goodness Ekunke, a 14-year-old chess prodigy, emerged as the inaugural champion of the International Chess Federation World Amateur Rapid Chess Championship 2026 held in Abuja, scoring an impressive 9/11. Ekunke outperformed experienced Nigerian players Eugene Unwana and Bomo Kigigha, who both finished with 8½ points.

The championship, organized by FIDE and the Nigeria Chess Federation, consisted of 11 rounds with a time control of 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment. Ekunke, born in Matogun, Ogun State, has been a notable player since he became a junior champion in the U-14 category at age eight.

His journey in chess began at six, inspired by watching his father play. The tournament also featured 17-year-old Joseph Sambo, who had a strong performance but ultimately finished fourth with 7½ points after losing crucial matches in the final rounds.

The event attracted amateur players globally and was attended by dignitaries including FIDE delegate Sergei Indeikin and Nigeria Chess Federation President Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo.
