Nigeria Hosts Historic FIDE Chess Championships in Abuja

The Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF), led by President Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, Ph.D., successfully hosted the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships from August 1 to 8, 2026, at the Bolton White Hotel in Abuja. This event was a landmark achievement as it marked the first time Africa hosted this prestigious international competition.

The Championships attracted players, officials, and chess enthusiasts globally, fostering high-level competition and camaraderie. Notably, 14-year-old Ekunke Odey Goodness won the gold medal in the Rapid event with an impressive 11-round performance, scoring 9 points.

Nigerian players Eugene Unwana and Bomo Kigigha secured silver and bronze medals, respectively, creating an all-Nigerian podium. The Championships also featured winners in various rating categories, including Efemuai Odafe Benedict, who won the U2300 Open title.

Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, praised the NCF for its organization and collaboration with FIDE and the African Chess Confederation, highlighting the growth of chess activities in Nigeria.
