Bauchi State Declares Emergency Amid Cholera Outbreak

On August 1, 2026, the Bauchi State government declared a cholera outbreak after confirming 16 deaths linked to the disease. This declaration was made in a memo from the Bauchi State Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, signed by Commissioner Dr Sani Mabammed Dambam.

As of July 31, 2026, there were 398 suspected cholera cases across 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs), with a case fatality rate of 4%. The most affected LGAs include Toro, Alkaleri, Kirfi, Ganjuwa, Bauchi, and Tafawa Balewa.

Laboratory investigations confirmed active cholera transmission, identifying six PCR-confirmed cases of Vibrio cholerae 01 Ogawa. The outbreak meets the epidemiological and laboratory criteria for an official declaration.

The state government has initiated a multisectoral response involving surveillance, case management, and community engagement, deploying Rapid Response Teams to the affected areas and strengthening treatment centers.
