$1 Billion Port Modernization to Start by Q3 2026

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is set to initiate a $1 billion port modernization program, with physical construction expected to begin by the end of Q3 2026. Dantsoho, a key figure in the initiative, emphasized the comprehensive overhaul of aging quay walls, deepening navigational channels, and automating terminal infrastructure across all port locations.

Preparatory activities, including community engagements and stakeholder consultations, are currently underway. The program aims to achieve a 50% reduction in vessel turnaround times and enhance cargo handling efficiency.

Key components include acquiring advanced tugboats, rehabilitating quay walls at Tin-Can and Apapa, and implementing modern Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) technology. Funding for the project has been secured through negotiations with foreign financing partners, and loan servicing has commenced.

Additionally, an upgrade of the Electronic Call-Up System (Eto) is planned to eliminate fraudulent activities, while expanded barge operations and freight rail connections to Kano and Kaduna are expected to reduce truck congestion.
