Buhari's Neutral Stance on Tinubu in APC Primary Explained

Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, disclosed that late former President Muhammadu Buhari refrained from openly supporting Bola Tinubu during the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary for the 2023 general election due to initial concerns about Tinubu's suitability. Lawal stated that Buhari was reluctant to endorse Tinubu based on religious and ethical principles but eventually agreed to a neutral stance after discussions.

Lawal proposed that Buhari should allow party delegates to choose the candidate, arguing that Tinubu's past contributions to APC campaigns made it difficult for Buhari to oppose him. Initially, Buhari rejected Lawal's proposal, expressing confidence that if left to him, Tinubu would secure the nomination.

Lawal countered that even if Tinubu won the ticket, the general election's outcome would ultimately depend on the electorate. Buhari also raised concerns about Tinubu's potential treatment of their political allies if elected.
