Nigerian Army Receives 7% of 2025 Security Budget

The Nigerian Army's budget for 2025 included a total expenditure proposal of ₦1.17 trillion, with only ₦1.46 billion disbursed by December 31, 2025, representing a mere 7.11% of the allocated funds. The Nigerian Air Force's total expenditure was ₦1.25 trillion, with ₦238.32 billion released, indicating a 19.04% disbursement rate.

The budget for purchasing defense equipment was ₦336.76 billion, but only ₦16.71 billion was disbursed, reflecting a low performance of 4.96%. The overall military budget faced significant setbacks, with various allocations for training, transport, and equipment maintenance receiving minimal funding.

As of December 2025, Nigeria's national debt had escalated to ₦159.28 trillion, raising concerns about the government's ability to finance military operations effectively. Reports indicated that between January and October 2025, 9,514 people were killed across Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for improved military funding and efficiency in combating terrorism and violent crime.
