FG and ASUU Sign Agreement to Stabilize University Calendar

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) recently signed a landmark agreement aimed at resolving a 16-year impasse in negotiations and stabilizing the university calendar. This agreement, which replaces the 2009 pact, is designed to improve lecturer welfare and ensure industrial harmony, thereby ending the cycle of strikes that have plagued public universities.

The negotiations, which began in 2017, faced multiple failures across several administrations. The new agreement includes a 40% salary increase for university lecturers, alongside improved working conditions and additional remuneration.

It also introduces a framework for academic remuneration that allows for clearer definitions of roles and responsibilities. President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa were commended for their efforts in restoring trust in the university system.

The agreement is expected to end the prolonged disruptions that have caused students to spend additional years in university, with some students reportedly taking six years to complete four-year courses.
