INEC Addresses Voter Challenges for 2026 FCT Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued a statement on February 22, 2026, regarding challenges faced by voters in locating polling units during the FCT area council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026. Chief Press Secretary Adedayo Oketola clarified that there was no voter migration, contrary to claims, and emphasized that the commission had decongested 411 polling units to accommodate 580,000 voters by redistributing them across 1,156 polling units.

INEC noted that the creation of additional polling units in 2022 aimed to enhance voter access, resulting in a total of 119,972 polling units nationwide. The commission also highlighted that no new voter migration would occur in 2026, and that the split polling units were part of a previous initiative.

To assist voters, INEC provided online resources for polling unit locations and encouraged voters to verify their details ahead of the elections.
