INEC Confirms 2022 Creation of FCT Split Polling Units

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued a clarification regarding the split polling units in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stating that these units were established in February 2022 to improve voter access. INEC's Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, emphasized that there will be no voter migration to new polling units in 2026, countering allegations from political actors suggesting last-minute changes could disenfranchise voters.

INEC acknowledged challenges faced by voters in locating polling units during elections but reiterated that the split units were not newly created but rather part of an initiative to decongest polling locations. The commission expanded the number of polling units nationwide to approximately 119,972, with 411 units in FCT alone, redistributing about 580,000 voters to reduce overcrowding.

INEC also noted that voter confusion was observed during mock elections and urged voters to verify their polling details ahead of the elections.
