Nigerian Nurses Association Raises Migration Concerns

During the 2026 International Nurses Day celebration held in Abuja, Haruna Mamman, President of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), expressed concerns regarding the migration of 57,000 Nigerian nurses over the past five years. He noted that 16,000 nurses migrated to the United Kingdom alone during this period.

Mamman emphasized that Nigerian-trained nurses and midwives are among the best globally but are leaving the country due to poor remuneration, insecurity, and inadequate working conditions. The theme for this year’s celebration was "Nursing: The Future Empowers Nurses to Save Lives," which underscored the need for investment in nursing welfare, safe working conditions, and leadership opportunities.

Merci Laraba Lenka, National Treasurer of NANNM, highlighted that insecurity has made hospitals unsafe for nurses, citing instances of kidnapping and abduction. She called for better welfare and recognition for nurses, who play a critical role in patient care.

Mamman assured that the association would continue to engage with the government and relevant stakeholders to improve nurses' welfare and remuneration.
