Adeleke Campaign Alleges Police Intimidation Ahead of Poll

On Monday, the campaign organization of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke submitted a petition to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), alleging widespread human rights abuses and politically motivated arrests of its members in the lead-up to the August 15 governorship election. The spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, Pelumi Olajengbesi, accused the Nigeria Police Force of being used as a tool for political oppression against the governor's supporters.

He claimed that numerous members had been arbitrarily arrested and detained due to their political affiliation, which he argued threatened the election's credibility. Olajengbesi expressed concerns over the Inspector-General of Police's ability to ensure a fair election, citing a recent incident where the Osun State Commissioner of Police was transferred following complaints about arrests but was later reinstated under pressure.

He also mentioned the arrest of a supporter, Popoola Alabama, who is currently detained in Abuja.
