INEC Warns Politicians Against Abusive Campaigns for 2027

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a warning to politicians and political parties regarding the use of abusive language in their campaigns for the 2027 elections. Adedayo Oketola, the Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, stated in a telephone interview with Vanguard that any party or politician found guilty of using abusive, intemperate, or inflammatory language risks severe financial penalties and possible imprisonment as stipulated in the Electoral Act 2026.

Oketola emphasized that campaign rhetoric could be deemed as intimidation if it incites ethnic, religious, or regional hostility. He cited Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2026, which prohibits abusive language that could provoke violent emotions or target specific groups.

Violators face a maximum fine of ₦5,000,000 or imprisonment for 12 months, while non-compliant political parties could incur fines of ₦10,000,000. Oketola clarified that INEC is not a security agency but is empowered to monitor political campaigns and enforce compliance with the Code of Conduct for Political Parties.
