INEC Issues N10m Fine Warning Against Hate Speech in Oyo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued a warning to political parties and candidates in Oyo State regarding the use of hate speech, abusive language, and inflammatory statements during political campaigns. This warning was articulated by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Oyo State, Professor Adeniran Tella, during a stakeholders’ meeting at the INEC office in Agodi, Ibadan.
Tella stated that candidates found guilty of violating the Electoral Act 2026 could face fines of up to N5 million or a 12-month prison sentence. Political parties could incur a fine of N10 million for a first offence.
The REC expressed concern over the increasing use of abusive language in political activities as the 2027 general elections approach and urged candidates to focus on issues rather than personal attacks or divisive rhetoric. He referenced Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2026, which prohibits campaign messages that could provoke violence or harm religious, ethnic, or tribal sentiments.
Tella emphasized INEC's commitment to monitoring compliance with these regulations.
