INEC, Police to Crackdown on Politicians Ahead of 2027

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) announced a crackdown on politicians making threatening or inflammatory statements ahead of the 2027 general elections. This response follows public concern over provocative remarks from various politicians, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who referenced historical political violence during a meeting on April 25.

Former NNPP Board of Trustees secretary Buba Galadima urged citizens to bring "bottles and jerrycans of kerosene" to polling units. Other incidents included Osun State Senator Francis Fadahunsi allegedly issuing death threats and various warnings from local politicians against non-APC supporters.

Under the Electoral Act, Section 97(1) prohibits threats of violence during campaigns, with penalties including fines and imprisonment. INEC's Media Adviser, Adedayo Oketola, indicated that the commission could sanction non-compliant parties, while police spokesperson Anietie Iniedu stated that incitement would be prosecuted.

Critics like Yiaga Africa's Samson Itodo and human rights lawyer Jiti Ogunye highlighted the lack of consequences for such threats.
