Court Adjourns Atiku's Suit Against Tinubu's Eligibility

The Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned the lawsuit filed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against President Bola Tinubu regarding his eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election. The adjournment occurred on Tuesday due to the failure to serve Tinubu with the originating summons.

Atiku's counsel, Joseph Silas, informed Justice Inyang Ekwo that attempts to serve Tinubu personally were unsuccessful and sought an order for substituted service. Omosanya Popoola, representing Tinubu, offered to accept the court documents on his behalf, leading to a disagreement over whether he had the authority to do so.

Justice Ekwo adjourned the case to allow Atiku's legal team to regularize the service, with the next hearing scheduled for September 28, 2026. Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, is questioning Tinubu's qualifications based on allegations regarding an NYSC discharge certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, which he claims bears an incorrect name and may be forged.
