Opposition Parties Propose Single Term for 2027 Elections

On August 31, 2026, six major opposition parties in Nigeria gathered in Abuja to strategize for the 2027 general elections against President Bola Tinubu. Notably absent were prominent presidential candidates Alhaji of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

The summit included senior figures like Prince Adewole Adebayo from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Lawal Musa Daura, the APM's vice-presidential candidate. Mallam Salihu Lukman, representing the G-100 coalition of civil society groups, proposed a Government of National Competence based on a four-year single term.

He stressed the importance of tangible agreements and cited past successful opposition coalitions in Kenya and Malaysia. The meeting resulted in the proposal of three coalition bodies and five working groups to prepare for a second summit.

Fred Agbedi, leader of the Minority Caucus, urged unity among opposition leaders to avoid repeating the mistakes of the 2023 elections.
