INEC Announces Voter Register Cleanup and New Political Parties Details for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, revealed during a quarterly consultative meeting with civil society organizations in Abuja that INEC will conduct a nationwide cleanup of Nigeria's voter register to ensure the integrity of the electoral process for the 2027 general elections. The voter registration process, which began before the 2011 elections and has been updated for subsequent elections, currently stands at 93,469,008 voters.

Challenges such as duplicate registrations, underage voters, non-citizens, deceased individuals, and incomplete records have been identified and are being addressed through a voter revalidation exercise. Additionally, INEC has received 171 letters of intent from groups seeking recognition as political parties, with assessments ongoing to ensure compliance with legal requirements.

The voter registration exercise's second phase commenced on January 5 and will run until April 17, with the entire program expected to conclude on August 30. INEC is committed to transparency, regularly publishing data on pre-registration and physical registration on its website.
