INEC Registers Two New Political Parties Ahead of 2027 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially registered two new political parties, the Democrat Leadership Alliance and Nation Democrat Congress, during a quarterly consultative meeting with political party leaders at its headquarters in Abuja. This development brings the total number of recognized political parties in Nigeria to 21.

Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of INEC, explained that the registration process for the two new parties was handled differently based on their specific circumstances.

The Democrat Leadership Alliance and Nation Democrat Congress successfully met the statutory requirements and legal directives, with the Nation Democrat Congress complying with specific legal directives from the Federal High Court in Lokoja. Amupitan assured the representatives of the new parties that formal certificates of registration would be issued to them shortly after a brief ceremony.
