CAN Warns Against Using Jesus in 2027 Election Politics

On Thursday, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), under the leadership of President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, issued a warning to politicians and their supporters regarding the use of Jesus Christ's name in political discussions as the 2027 general elections approach. This statement was prompted by comments from actress Precious Oruche, known as Mama Pee, who referenced Jesus in relation to former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Okoh stressed that while political discussions can be passionate, the name of Jesus should not be used as a campaign tool or to elevate politicians to divine status. He affirmed that Nigerians are free to support any political candidate, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and President Bola Tinubu, but cautioned against diminishing the reverence due to Christ through intense political loyalty.

Okoh declared, “No politician is the Messiah. No political party represents the salvation of the human spirit that Christ epitomises,” emphasizing the need to keep political debates focused on competence and policies rather than religious invocations.
