CAN Warns Politicians Against Misusing Jesus' Name

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), under the leadership of President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, issued a warning to politicians and their supporters regarding the use of Jesus Christ's name in political campaigns as the 2027 general elections approach. This statement was prompted by comments made by Precious Oruche, known as Mama Pee, who referenced Jesus while discussing Peter Obi's political stance.

Okoh stressed that while political discussions can be passionate, Christians must refrain from using Jesus as a political tool or weapon. He stated that Jesus Christ is not a political candidate and should not be invoked to elevate any politician.

Okoh affirmed that Nigerians are free to support or criticize any political candidate, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Bola Tinubu, but political loyalty should not compromise the reverence due to Christ. He urged a focus on issues like competence and policies in political debates, warning against presenting politicians as messianic figures, as no electoral victory justifies compromising the honor due to Christ.
