Atiku Abubakar Questions Obasanjo's Electoral Strength

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, has dismissed former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s electoral strength, asserting that Obasanjo could not win his own state or the South-West during the 1999 presidential election. Atiku made these comments while speaking to journalists on Wednesday, amid a renewed exchange regarding their political relationship and the events surrounding Obasanjo's emergence as president in 1999.

He stated that Obasanjo's victory was largely due to support from northern Nigeria, referred to as Arewa, and claimed, “He possesses no electoral value.” This dispute intensified after Obasanjo labeled his decision to select Atiku as his running mate in 1999 as the “biggest mistake” of his presidency. Atiku has rejected Obasanjo’s narrative, accusing him of attempting to rewrite history for political gain ahead of the 2027 elections.

Atiku emphasized his contributions to their administration and expressed his commitment to creating opportunities for young Nigerians if elected president.
