MURIC Demands Muslim Candidates for 2027 Elections

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), led by Executive Director Professor Ishaq Akintola, has issued a statement urging political parties in Nigeria, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), People's Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), to field Muslim candidates for the 2027 general elections. The group emphasizes that the Muslim population constitutes a significant demographic in the South-West and insists that qualified Muslim candidates are capable of occupying governorship positions in states such as Oyo, Lagos, Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, and Osun.

The statement highlights the current political imbalance, noting that the governors of Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, and Osun are Christians, despite Muslims being a majority in Yorubaland. It points out that there has not been a single Muslim governor in the southern states, with only 35-40% representation in two states.

The group warns that political parties should not expect support from the Muslim electorate if they fail to present Muslim candidates.
