INEC Reviews Cybersecurity for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced a comprehensive review of its cybersecurity and data systems as part of its preparations for the 2027 general elections. This announcement was made by INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, SAN, on Thursday in Abuja during a meeting with Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Amupitan stated that instead of changing technology entirely, the commission aims to improve existing technologies, including the deployment of online voter registration and a bi-modal voter accreditation system. He also noted the importance of training IT staff in both online and physical formats ahead of the elections.

The review will include penetration testing, disaster recovery mechanisms, and communication protocols to enhance public confidence and trust in the electoral process. Montgomery highlighted the UK's commitment to supporting Nigeria's democratic process, particularly in the lead-up to the elections, and emphasized the strategic partnership between the two countries.
