2027: INEC commences voter registration in Sokoto

INEC has started the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Sokoto for the 2027 general election. The registration process will begin online on August 8, 2025, and physical registration at designated centers will start on August 25, 2025, from Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Umar Yusuf Garba, emphasized the importance of the exercise in ensuring inclusivity, accuracy, and integrity of the national voter register. The CVR will accommodate new registrants, voters wishing to transfer their registration, and those seeking replacement for lost, damaged, or defaced Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

INEC urged eligible citizens to present valid identification and warned against multiple registrations, which is an offense under the Electoral Act. The Commission will deploy Voter Enrollment Devices and Automatic Biometric Identification Systems to detect multiple entries.

INEC called for support from the media, civil society organizations, traditional and religious leaders to ensure a peaceful and transparent registration.
