INEC to Establish Voting Centers for IDPs in Plateau

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is preparing to set up voting centers for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in nine local government areas of Plateau State ahead of the 2027 general elections. Prof. Samuel Egwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Plateau State, announced this during a meeting with political party leaders and stakeholders in Jos.

The initiative aims to fulfill Nigeria's obligations under the Kampala Declaration on Internally Displaced Persons, which ensures that displaced citizens can vote. The nine local governments identified are Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Jos South, Mangu, Kanam, Kanke, Wase, and Bokkos.

Egwu emphasized that votes from IDPs would be counted as part of their original wards and constituencies. He urged political parties to assist in identifying displaced members for proper documentation.

With 129 days until the elections, Egwu expressed hope for a return to peace in the affected areas, allowing IDPs to vote either in their original communities or in their places of displacement.
