Journalists Urged to Uphold Ethics Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Kano Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) commenced its 2026 retreat in Kaduna, concentrating on the legal, security, and ethical responsibilities of journalists in preparation for the 2027 general elections. The retreat, themed “2027 General Elections: Navigating Legal, Security and Ethical Challenges in the Media,” gathered media practitioners to discuss the challenges of election reporting and the media's role in ensuring electoral credibility.

Barrister Abdulsalam Yusuf addressed the attendees on “Legal Boundaries and Ethical Obligations in Election Reporting,” urging journalists to understand election laws and the limits of media reporting. He stressed that press freedom comes with responsibilities, particularly during politically sensitive times, and highlighted the need for journalists to verify information before publication.

Yusuf also warned against hate speech and inflammatory reporting that could incite violence. The retreat included discussions on the security challenges journalists face during elections, such as threats and harassment, and encouraged participants to prioritize their safety while maintaining professional independence.
