Editors Demand Protection for Journalists Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) issued a communiqué after its Standing Committee meeting in Kano, signed by President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, expressing alarm over the harassment and prosecution of journalists. The Guild urged the Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to create a level playing field for all political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

They criticized the misuse of cybercrime legislation and other laws that could hinder legitimate journalism, asserting that press freedom is essential for democracy and good governance. The NGE called for fair treatment of all political parties by INEC and other agencies, advocating for lawful campaign practices and constructive engagement with the media.

They also encouraged the media to uphold high professional standards in reporting. Additionally, the Guild urged the government to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians in its policies and expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of federal roads.
