NGE President Advocates Responsible Journalism for Peace

On Wednesday, Eze Anaba, the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, addressed journalists at the annual symposium and 10th anniversary celebration of The Academia Campus Journalists at the Federal College of Education in Abeokuta, affiliated with the University of Ibadan. He emphasized the importance of responsible journalism in addressing Nigeria's security challenges, urging journalists to prioritize ethical standards, fact-checking, and avoid sensationalism.

Anaba stated that journalism and insecurity are interconnected, warning that irresponsible reporting could exacerbate tensions and panic. He highlighted the increasing insecurity around tertiary institutions, including kidnappings and violence, and called for conflict-sensitive reporting to counter misinformation.

Anaba encouraged student journalists to promote civic education and peaceful dialogue, while also reminding professional journalists of their roles as impartial mediators and watchdogs. He described fact-checking as a vital tool for journalists, urging them to prioritize accuracy over speed.

Dr. Joel Agbebi also delivered a goodwill message, encouraging journalists to view their profession seriously.
