Nigeria Faces 'Revenge of the Poor' Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) and the Big Tent of the Nigeria Citizens’ Front (NCFront) have raised alarms about Nigeria's trajectory towards a "revenge of the poor" as the 2027 general elections approach. During a briefing in Lagos, Prof. Pat Utomi, the coalition leader, emphasized the escalating levels of poverty, hunger, and anger among Nigerians, exacerbated by persistent insecurity and a decline in confidence in democratic institutions.

He stated, “The pain, hunger and anger is so palpable,” and called for citizens to mobilize against injustice and demand accountability from political leaders. Utomi also stressed the importance of adhering to electoral laws, particularly following recent elections like the Osun governorship election.

Wale Okunniyi, the Convener of MCE, expressed concerns about Nigeria's shift from one-party dominance to "one-man rule," which he warned threatens democracy. MCE aims to build the capacity of opposition parties and enhance democratic participation ahead of the elections.
