Political Parties Delay Campaign Councils Ahead of 2027 Elections

As of August 18, 2026, major political parties in Nigeria, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), have not fully constituted or unveiled their campaign councils for the upcoming 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections. This delay is attributed to internal intrigues, consultations, and legal disputes.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set August 19, 2026, as the start date for these campaigns, while governorship and state Assembly campaigns will commence on September 9, 2026. Alhaji Bala Ibrahim, the APC National Director of Publicity, stated that the party's campaign council would be announced by the National Working Committee (NWC) and emphasized that the August 19 date opens the campaign window but does not require immediate activity.

An anonymous senior APC official indicated that the party is balancing the interests of various stakeholders, including governors and former governors, and addressing grievances from aspirants who lost in recent primaries. The APC's recent loss in the Osun State governorship election has further complicated discussions regarding key campaign positions.
