Nigeria's 2027 Presidential Campaigns Kick Off Today

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has lifted the ban on political campaigns, marking the official start of the campaign period for Nigeria's 2027 presidential election on August 19, 2026. According to Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, campaigns will run until January 15, 2027, one day before the elections scheduled for January 16, 2027.

The governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow, starting on September 9, 2026, and concluding on February 5, 2027. The presidential race features three leading candidates: incumbent Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peter Obi of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

The upcoming election is expected to mirror the competitive nature of the 2023 presidential poll. Despite dissatisfaction with the APC government due to economic challenges, the ruling party may prevail if opposition parties do not unite effectively.
