PDP Faces Crisis in Kebbi Ahead of 2027 Elections

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State is experiencing a crisis as it struggles to maintain relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party's influence has waned significantly following the defection of three serving senators—Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South)—to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This shift has left the PDP without representation in the Senate, raising concerns about its ability to mount a strong opposition. The party's leadership, led by state chairman Usman Bello, is attempting to regroup by conducting ward congresses across the 21 local government areas to elect new executives.

However, the PDP's challenges intensified in December 2025 when 1,500 members from the Zuru Emirate defected to the APC, citing the APC-led administration's performance in infrastructure and security. The defections have also affected the women's wing, with former national leader Mariya Waziri leaving for the APC in February 2026.

PDP's leadership acknowledges the difficult phase but insists on rebuilding efforts to emerge stronger before the elections.
