Kwankwaso Claims Obi Would Modify Fuel Subsidies

On September 23, 2026, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), claimed that a Peter Obi-led government would reinstate fuel subsidies in a modified form. Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, made these remarks during an interview with Arise TV while discussing the fuel subsidy policy of President Bola Tinubu's administration.

Both Kwankwaso and Obi have criticized the handling of fuel pricing and agree on the need for relief from high pump prices, but they differ on the subsidy issue. Obi, the NDC presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has consistently defended the removal of fuel subsidies, arguing it should have been done in a structured manner.

He emphasized that the government should have addressed corruption and established a transparent pricing framework. Obi has also stated that the savings from subsidy removal should be invested in critical sectors.

In contrast, Kwankwaso criticized the abrupt removal of the subsidy and suggested that an Obi-led government would bring back subsidies in a new way.
