Peter Obi Clarifies Kwankwaso's Fuel Subsidy Comments

Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), addressed a controversy regarding fuel subsidy comments made by his vice-presidential candidate, Kwankwaso. During a television interview, Kwankwaso indicated that the NDC would reinstate fuel subsidy if elected, which contradicted Obi's earlier stance.

At the 2026 All Nigeria Editors Conference organized by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) at the Enugu International Conference Centre, Obi clarified that there was no disagreement between him and Kwankwaso. He stated that Kwankwaso did not advocate for the outright removal of the subsidy but rather proposed a different approach to the subsidy regime.

Obi highlighted that both he and Kwankwaso recognized corruption as a significant issue within the subsidy system. He asserted that addressing corruption could potentially eliminate the need for a subsidy, referencing a reported ₦15.8 trillion saved from the subsidy.

Obi also called for increased investment in primary healthcare, noting that only about 10% of facilities were functional and proposing the establishment of 10,000 primary healthcare centers at an estimated cost of ₦1 trillion.
