Police Warn Against Incitement Ahead of 2027 Elections

CSP Anietie Iniedu, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), issued a warning to political stakeholders regarding inciting remarks that could lead to electoral violence as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. He emphasized that incitement is a criminal offense under Nigerian law and stated that anyone found guilty would face investigation and prosecution.

Iniedu highlighted the responsibility of the NPF to maintain law and order, regardless of whose interests might be affected. He mentioned ongoing investigations into inciting comments made by a senator from Osun State, a Kuje Area Council Chairman, and a Commissioner in Borno State.

Iniedu also addressed concerns about the prosecution of electoral offenders from the Osun State elections, noting that 154 individuals had been arrested and were under investigation, while also acknowledging challenges related to witness testimonies in court.
