Imo Rep Chinedu Threatens Legal Action Post-Supreme Court Ruling

Emeka Chinedu, representing the Ahiazu/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency of Imo State in the House of Representatives, has threatened to invoke Nigeria’s cybercrime law against AIC Akwarandu, the Convener of Ezinihitte Progressives, after a Supreme Court ruling impacted his candidacy for the 2027 general elections. The Supreme Court upheld provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 concerning party membership registers, which had been previously voided by the Court of Appeal.

Chinedu, a two-term lawmaker who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Young Progressives Party, was unveiled as the YPP candidate for the constituency on September 18. Akwarandu welcomed the Supreme Court's decision, asserting it closed loopholes for late defections and questioned Chinedu's eligibility based on the timing of his party movements.

The Ezinihitte Progressives declared that there would be no candidate from the constituency for the upcoming election and called for Chinedu to withdraw from the race.
